Phantom Rock — locally 'Phantom's Head' — is a metamorphic rock near Suryanelli in the Munnar high range (Idukki) that resembles a human skull, sitting at roughly 2,000 m. Reaching it is a two-part adventure: a ~10 km unpaved, rugged 4x4 approach from Suryanelli through tea gardens, cardamom plantations and shola (cloud) forest, then a steep ~2.4 km trek (about 823 ft of climb, 1–1.5 hr) to the summit ridge, which faces the Anayirangal Dam and is a favourite sunset spot. Local off-road groups often pair it with a Kolukkumalai sunrise run the next morning. This is private plantation/estate land near Suryanelli — under Idukki's 2025 rules the off-road approach is run by permitted local jeep operators, so go with a local 4x4 rather than a private vehicle.
