Tawang lies in far-western Arunachal Pradesh near 3,000 m, reached over the 4,170 m Sela pass through a remote, border-sensitive land of Monpa villages, hilltop monasteries and glacial lakes such as Sangestar (Madhuri) Tso. The driving is rough high-altitude mountain road broken by rugged lake and meadow tracks, where altitude, weather and sheer remoteness are the real challenge rather than technical obstacles. This is a permit-controlled region: Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit and foreign nationals a Protected Area Permit, and the border approaches like Bumla are military-restricted — go only where civilians are allowed. Cross Sela early before the weather closes in, acclimatise carefully, and carry fuel, recovery gear and proper cold-weather kit. **Best season:** April - October **Recommended tyre pressure:** 28-34 PSI **Preparation:** - Permits are mandatory — Inner Line Permit for Indians, Protected Area Permit for foreigners - Bumla and other border areas are military-restricted; go only where civilians are allowed - Cross Sela early and watch the weather — snow and fog can close the pass any month - Acclimatise to the altitude and carry fuel, recovery gear and warm clothing
