Leh to Chilling to Padum is a route lead linking named destinations in Ladakh. Official Ladakh tourism identifies Chilling and the Zanskar Valley, while the district tourism office identifies Padum as a Zanskar destination. The BRO's Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road provides regional road context. Confirm the precise Leh–Chilling–Padum alignment, current opening schedule, roadworks and conditions with local authorities before departure; the named stops alone do not establish a continuously open driving route.
Nubra Valley, reached over the high Khardung La from Leh, is a surreal corner of Ladakh where sand dunes meet snow-capped peaks and braided rivers. For overlanders it combines genuine high-altitude driving with some of the most striking scenery anywhere in India.
The terrain ranges from the rough, high-altitude climb over the pass to soft sand near Hunder, gravel river flats and rocky tracks. Extreme altitude saps engine and human performance alike, and conditions shift from dusty to icy quickly.
Indian nationals must pay the Ladakh Environment & Development Fee online (lahdclehpermit.in) before arriving — it has replaced the old Inner Line Permit; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered Leh travel agent. Carry the receipt or PAP, as checkposts on the Khardung La road verify them. Acclimatise before crossing the pass, carry fuel, recovery boards and warm gear, and take the altitude seriously — this is among the highest driving you can do.
**Best season:** June - September
