Manali sits at around 2,050 m at the head of the Kullu valley, the launch point for some of the Himalayas' highest driving. The accessible off-road interest lies on the forest and river-side tracks around old Manali, Solang and the Manalsu valley, and on the rugged approaches toward Lahaul once the high passes open — rocky, gravelly going broken by glacier-fed stream crossings. This is serious high-altitude terrain: the famous crossings over Rohtang and toward Spiti are permit-rationed and snow-bound for much of the year, and many celebrated routes like Hampta are foot treks rather than drives, so don't take a vehicle where it isn't allowed.
