Hindustan–Tibet Highway (NH-5)

Barot (~1,829 m) is a quiet, offbeat valley in the Chhota Bhangal area of Mandi district, reached by a narrow, winding road that branches off the Joginder Nagar side and drops through pine and deodar forest to the trout-stocked Uhl river. It is best known for the century-old Shanan hydro haulage-trolley line and a forest-fringed river setting rather than for any single 'attraction' - a low-key self-drive escape into a green Himalayan side-valley. The access road is narrow and winding with some rough stretches; it is generally open through the year but can be affected by monsoon landslips and winter snow at the higher edges. **Access:** the valley road and village are public. The upper Chhota Bhangal / Nargu area is forested - stay on the road; confirm conditions in monsoon and winter.

Chanshal Pass (~3,749 m / 12,300 ft) is a high, remote crossing above Rohru in Shimla district that carries the road toward the isolated Dodra-Kwar valley - among the highest motorable points in the Shimla region. The drive climbs through apple country and alpine meadows to a broad, windswept saddle with long Himalayan views, on a rough, largely unbarriered mountain road. It is a demanding high-altitude self-drive - a high-clearance vehicle is strongly advised - and the pass is snowbound and closed through winter, best driven in the short summer-to-early-autumn window. **Access:** the pass road is public but very remote with little infrastructure. Carry fuel and essentials, avoid it in bad weather, and confirm it is open (it closes with snow) before setting out.

Hatu Peak (~3,400 m / 11,150 ft) is the high ridge above Narkanda on the old Hindustan-Tibet road, reached by a narrow, steep forest road that climbs through dark deodar to a wooden Hatu Mata temple and a long Himalayan horizon. Unlike most Shimla-area viewpoints you can drive almost to the summit, making it a short but rewarding self-drive climb (many also walk the ~7 km up from Narkanda). The summit road is single-lane with tight hairpins; it is best driven roughly April to June and September to November, and snow can close or ice the top in winter. **Access:** the ridge road is public. The approach passes through reserved deodar forest, so stay on the road; confirm the summit road is open (snow) before you drive up.
