This is not theoretical. Across India, drivers have had their vehicles impounded and seized, and have faced heavy fines, FIRs and prosecution, for taking 4x4s into reserved and protected forests, wildlife sanctuaries, eco-sensitive zones and dry riverbeds without permission. Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 and the Indian Forest Act 1927 the vehicle itself can be confiscated. Assume the penalty is losing your vehicle and a court case — not just being turned away.

About this trail
Nubra Valley is a hard-rated off-road trail near Leh, Ladakh over Sand, Dunes, Rock terrain. As a hard route it's a demanding route best left to experienced drivers in properly-equipped, modified vehicles.
The trail is at its best in summer and post-monsoon.
Watch for river crossings, high altitude (thin air) and snow and ice; run it in a convoy rather than solo; it best suits experienced drivers.
Indians need no Inner Line Permit (abolished 2021) but pay a mandatory Ladakh Environmental & Development Fee via the official LAHDC portal (lahdclehpermit.in); foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) under MHA rules. Access is over Khardung La ~5,359 m — extreme altitude (AMS risk) and glacial-fed Shyok/Nubra crossings; the pass can be snow-closed in winter..
