Coorg (Kodagu) is Karnataka's coffee country, a misty stretch of the Western Ghats whose plantation and forest tracks make for scenic, moderately technical off-roading. Rolling estates, waterfalls and the high ridge of Tadiandamol give the region its character. Trails here combine red-mud plantation roads, forest climbs and the occasional rocky section. Conditions change quickly with the weather — a firm track in the morning can turn slick by afternoon — so adaptable driving and good tyres matter. Almost all the interesting tracks pass through private estates or reserved forest; obtain advance permission in writing from the estate owner or the Kodagu (Madikeri) Forest Department and line up a local contact — driving through estates or reserved forest without permission is illegal.
